This week we started to learn school vocabulary in Italian: "La scuola".
In Sixth class we have started a pen pal project with an Italian school - "Istituto Comprensivo Provenzani"- in Sicily. We have already received beautiful letters from our Italian pen pals, so this week we have been busy writing our own replies in Italian and in English. The children enjoyed writing and decorating their letters and they did a brilliant job!!! Bravissimi Rang a 6 :) A presto amici italiani!
Today we went down to the beach to collect stones so we could paint them during art. While down there, we decided to make the most of the good weather. We sat out in the sun and ate our lunch and went for a little paddle. Great day had by all!
6th Class had a ball yesterday at the Fun Day. They enjoyed the bouncing castle, orienteering, stop motion animation, making tie dye t shirts and then finishing off the day with KFC. We also got the most gorgeous surprise from the Murray family - a beautiful cake congratulating 6th class on finishing school. We really appreciated that yummy gift - thank you!
This morning we had a tea party to celebrate 6th Class finishing their Dromcondra tests. They thoroughly enjoyed their tea, mi-wadi and muffins.
6th Class were delighted to receive Lego STEM kits from Bricks4kidz. They had great fun building and racing their rescue robots.
Some of 6th Class took part in an art competition. They had to draw a picture based on the theme 'Light at the end of the tunnel'. What an amazing job they did. The teachers had a tough time picking their favourites. The ones with the most votes won a collection of paints. Congratulations to Zuzanna, Ayesha and Heather.
6th Class did a fantastic job out in the garden today. They worked incredibly hard painting, cleaning, sweeping, weeding and planting. As a treat and as a thank you for all their work, pizza was delivered to them at lunchtime. It was devoured before I had a chance to get a photo!
On Wednesday, 6th class learnt about electric currents, circuits, conductors and insulators. They then made their own squishy circuits using a battery, playdough and an LED. When the electrical current successfully passed through the circuit they made, the LED lit up!
6th Class went up to St Lappans today to investigate different types of trees and plants. They identified various plant species, sketched them and then made art pieces out of leaves and sticks on the ground. A great afternoon was had by all!
6th Class have been keeping busy on Google Classroom since Christmas. Here are some videos of what they got up to during online learning.
6th Class got into the Christmas spirit last week. They decorated the windows and made Christmas decorations. They did an amazing job!
Procedural Writing has never been so much fun! 6th Class made paper aeroplanes on Wednesday and then wrote up step by step instructions on how to make them. They also noted their results and evaluated them - questioning why some worked better than others.
Some of the students in 6th Class dressed up on Friday for Halloween. We had a great day watching a movie, doing PE and answering some Halloween questions during Gameshow Friday!
Over the last 7 weeks, 6th Class have been reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio. It really is a wonderful (!) story and we thoroughly enjoyed reading it everyday. After we read the book, the children did a book report and presented them on dodecahedrons. Each student also cut out and coloured in a picture of Auggie. They put their name in the helmet section and then the other students in the class wrote down compliments in the boxes.
6th Class were given the task to design and make a parachute that could drop an egg safely to the ground. They worked very hard on their projects for two weeks and had great fun testing out the parachutes! They wrote up their reports the following week and discussed what worked, what didn't work and why.
Over the last two weeks, 6th class have done some lovely art pieces. One piece they recreated was Gustav Klimt's "The Tree of Life". They also created their own versions of Haunted Houses for Halloween!
6th Class took part in a Mega Maths Quiz today for Maths week. Over 70 schools joined the zoom call and took part. We had a lot of fun problem solving together and working as a team.
Blackrock Castle Observatory organised a zoom call with former NASA astronaut Dan Tani and schools all over Ireland were able to watch the conversation live. Everyone also got the chance to email in some questions and Dan answered as many as he could. It was extremely interesting and informative as Dan told his journey towards becoming an astronaut.
This week we learned a lot about Australia so for art we decided to make our own didgeridoos!
6th Class are currently reading Wonder have done the most beautiful display about Kindness. Big thank you to the four students in the picture who drew, coloured and cut out giant Auggie!
Each student created their own version of A Starry Night. Here are a few samples. There are definitely a few Van Gogh's in 6th class!
6th Class had a little céilí on Wednesday and learned The Siege of Ennis. We had a lot of fun!
6th Class created their version of a geyser by dropping mentos into a bottle of Diet coke. They learned that the mint frees the carbon dioxide bubbles from the diet coke and because the bubbles are lighter than the fizzy drink, they rise to the surface - fast! Just like a geyser!
